Overseas Animation Box Office

Animated features are still thundering along in foreign venues:

Robert Zemeckis’ animated digital 3-D epic “Beowulf” howled its way to a strong soph sesh at the international box office, nabbing an impressive $26 million from 5,400 runs in 43 markets.

Combined with its domestic haul of $56.6 million, the Ray Winstone-Angelina Jolie-Anthony Hopkins starrer grossed $105 million worldwide in its first 10 days of release ...

The performances of a couple of other animated flicks also weren't shabby:

It was nothing but smiles for Disney-Pixar’s “Ratatouille,” a runaway international hit that crossed the $400 million mark at the international box office over the weekend. Toon, set in Paris, grossed $4.2 million, for an international cume of $402.6 million. It’s the fifth pic this year to cross the $400 million mark ...

“Enchanted" ... posted a respectable foreign opening, grossing $7.7 million from 1,000 runs in only eight markets. That represents a glowing per-location average of $7,345.

Bee Movie is rolling out sloowly overseas (four markets thus far, with a cume of $12.5 million). No word on how Ten Commandments is doing ...

Beowulf is a dreadful movie, Imax 3D or not. I'm I reject the argument that "it's good for the animation business" when a film is that bad. I'd buy into that argument if the film was at least attempting to be something more than an immature and repulsive bore with no repect for the audience.

Thankfully, it's having a hard time at the box office.

WHoa...I didn't realize that the arbitor of all taste for everyone was posting on this forum. Thank you for telling the rest of us dimwits what to think. I am so greatful!!

BTW it doesn't seem to be having a hard time at the BO (especially for a PG-13 animated film), doofus!

Actually, it's doing a very poor job at the box office. PG-13 or not, it's an incredibly immature film. I had no idea you were dimwitted.

If Ratatouille is being called a boxoffice failure, Beowulf has got to be one. It's going to have trouble getting to $100 million in the US. Since it wasn't cheap to make, that's bad.

It's all about perception. Beowulf is being perceived as a hit (especially the 3D screenings) and that is good for the industry. It's very unlikely it will make it's money back, but if you consider what if a similiar PG-13 animated film had been made for a much smaller budget...
At least there's a decent audience waiting for this type of animated film.
